What is Physics?

As defined in the dictionary, physics in its simplest form is described as "the study of matter, energy, and the interaction between them," (Webster, 1965). Through these three topics, physicists formulate unanswered questions, and attempt to solve these questions themselves through observation and experimentation, proving physics to be an experimental science. A few major questions that have been in the observation and experimentation process for centuries include: How did the universe begin?, How will the universe change in the future?, and What are the basic building blocks of matter? However, physics not only addresses these theoretical concepts; this science can be ...

computer games, were based on a theoretical understanding of electrons (What is physics?). It can be said that the previous programs were invented by humans with knowledge of physics. In addition to physics' role in today's society, this experimental science also plays a role in relation to other sciences.

Physics can be considered a foundation to Chemistry and Biology. Chemistry focuses on the interaction of energy and matter in chemical systems thereby proving to be a complex application of physics. Biology is considered as an application of chemical properties in living things, which also means, at its heart, biology is another field of science ruled by the physical laws. Also, major concepts in physics include the scientific fields of electronics, quantum physics, astronomy, and biophysics (Jones).

Overall, physics is a science that encourages thinking for one's self by means of experimentation. Topics most commonly researched in physics involve matter, energy and their ...
