What is the difference between a dialect and an accent?

An accent refers to the differences in pronunciation. Accents can also refer to the characteristics of people belonging to a geographical region, and social class. It is typical of their group, age, sex and usually their level of education. Accents can be good indicators of geographical identity. We can tell where people are from just by listening to their accents. However not only different countries vary in their accents but there are also regional accents. For example there is a clear distinction between a Welsh accent and an Irish accent. Basil Bernstein (1971) found that the working class tended to use a restricted code of English, whereas the middle and upper class had an elaborated code of English. The restricted code refers to the speaker drawing on the background of shared assumptions, and knowledge used in language within a group.
