`Arnie is a burden but acts as Gilbert's mouthpiece'

Throughout the film Gilbert feels he has to care and take responsibility for Arnie all through each and every day. Although, Arnie's behaviour forces him to get frustrated and annoyed, Arnie is helpful though being Gilbert's and sometimes the Grape family's mouthpiece.

Arnie may be considered a burden but ultimately he puts things into perspective and speaks his mind because he doesn't understand important social conventions including being polite and respectful. Burden or not Arnie is still a care of Gilbert as a result of Gilbert telling Ellen off for her rough treatment of Arnie stating, "you made him bleed". Then after Ellen leaves, Gilbert tells Arnie that he will make sure that nobody hurts him. Secondly, Momma plays no help during the negligible occasion that Gilbert drops the ball, which results in Arnie getting into some sort of trouble. "Well sorry isn't good enough, you've got to do better." Thirdly, Gilbert ultimately comes out saying that there are moments where he is so frustrated that the anger takes over and his emotions want to control him. "Some days you want him to live, some days you don't." Arnie may be considered a burden but ultimately; he projects the truth, emotions and his thoughts regardless of what society cares of them.
