Based on the fact that approximately 6 of every 10 pregnancies in the United States are unplanned, it should be obvious that we should be using contraceptives more often and that we should educate ourselves as to which is the best contraceptive. Two of the most commonly used forms of contraceptives are condoms and the birth control pill. But which is better? In order to determine which is the best contraceptive we must look at its effectiveness of preventing pregnancies, its abilities to prevent STDs, possible side effects, its availability, and last but not least does it interfere with the pleasures of intercourse.

The pill is 97-99.9% effective, however, the pills effectiveness can be reduced if the woman is taking some medications, such as certain antibiotics. In my personal opinion, that is just to many chances to be taking for the pill to fail.
As far as ability to protect from STDs, condoms win hands down. Because the condom covers the entire penis, there is no actual contact, nor exchanges of bodily fluids. "Except for abstinence, latex condoms are the most effective method for reducing the risk of infection from the virus that causes AIDS, other HIV-related illnesses, and other STDs" (A Guide to Contraceptive Choices).
