Socrates states this because the philosopher is the only one, with the proper education, with love and knowledge of the truth. He understands how the world works. He’s goal is to acquire all types of knowledge and loves to do so. He desires only the truth and hates falsehood. His understand the nature of beauty itself, and cares less for particulars, and what participates in, or decorative objects. They understand the eternal and unchanging. To be a leader you have to know how to rule, what is best for everyone, and care little for your own desires. Better education is one of his major arguments why Philosophers should be rulers. With education, Socrates uses the craftsmen analogy. He states in a conversation with his interlopers, if one is sick they would go to someone that has been trained specially trained in dealing with illness, which is a doctor. Thus, if a city or town is looking for a great ruler, they should logically look toward people that have been best trained to rule. Nobody would be better to reign, other than the Philosopher kings in Socrates eyes. However, in order for the Philosopher-Kings to rule, things would have to change within society. Socrates believed that arranged marriages and breeding the best would produce better offspring. He also thought to abolish the family unit, ant that the children should be raised by the state. ...
