Jails are not a waste of money. In fact, they are necessary for many reasons. They provide protection, they apply justice, and in some cases, they might even rehabilitate. We often hear of the growing problem of jail over crowding, but it would be even worse if these criminals we on the street--not paying the price for their crime. This would only encourage more crime, not to mention destroy the criminal justice system.

as somewhat of a deterrent. Jails meet this requirement because most individuals do not enjoy being removed from society and placed in a small cell. To put it simply, we need jails because there will always be criminals. Regardless of education and rehabilitation, some individuals are simply destined to live a life of crime because of their own choices. Murderers and rapists and other violent criminals must be kept away from the rest of the law-abiding citizens. Punishment and justice should never be forgotten when dealing with criminals on any level.
Jails are typically used as detention for individuals who commit minor crimes or they can serve as temporary holding places for individuals who are awaiting trail. For those who have committed minor crimes, a jail term makes more financial sense than sending them away to a prison.
