Wilson: “The Imperial German Government… put aside all restraints of law or humanity and use(d) its submarines to sink every ship that tried to approach Great Britain and Ireland, the western coast of Europe, or any of the ports controlled by the enemies of Germany within the Mediterranean… etc.”
Bush: “Saddam Hussein systematically raped, pillaged and plundered a tiny nation no threat to his own… he sought to add to the chemical weapons arsenal a… nuclear weapon…etc.”
In these statements, both Presidents offer litanies of wrongs committed by the “enemy”, thus justifying their actions and helping to further vilify the enemy.

These statements each emphasize the unselfishness of the American people in their addition to the war effort. Both Wilson and Bush are highlighting the fact that the wars they are going to fight are not America’s wars, but that America is willing to help for the greater good of humankind.
Wilson: “We shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest our hearts – for democracy, for the right of those who submit to authority to have a voice in their own (unreadable)… for the rights and liberties of small nations, for such a universal domination of right as shall bring peace and safety to all nations and make the world itself at last free.”
Bush: “‘There are things worth fighting for. A world in which brutality and lawlessness are allowed to go unchecked isn’t the kind of world we’re going to want to live in.’”
