Youth violence from juvenile and criminal justice sources indicate that 10% of the more than 20,000 homicides reported yearly are committed by individuals under 18 (Federal Bureau of Investigation, 1995). Juvenile violence was once viewed as a social problem to be dealt with primarily by the law enforcement and judicial systems. In 1999, juveniles accounted for 16% of all violent crime arrests, including 14% of aggravated assaults, 17% of forcible rapes, and 24% of weapons charges. How are our teens obtaining these weapons? We as parents have to be aware of our surrounding at all times as to what is brought into our homes. In addition, the data about youths as victims are also cause for concern. In 2001, 5,486 young people ages 10 to 24 were murdered, an average of 15 each day (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2004) (Feder et al., 2010). How amazing these statistics are and how true they are! What our kids are felling to realize that there are consequences behind their actions. It is up to us as parents to get involved.
