Solitude is the state of being alone or the absence of human activity. Through the characters of Úrsula Iguarán from One Hundred Years of Solitude and Clara from The House of Spirits, solitude is illustrated in its emotional, mental, and physical perspectives. Ursula and Clara are two domineering female presences in the Buendia and Trueba families that share a common element of solitude. Although indications of Ursula’s solitude may seem minimal at first, her nostalgia and old age eventually lead her to seclusion. Furthermore, Clara’s clairvoyance serves both as her identity, and the source of her solitude.
