Distortion by the Media

This sensationalism is what sells more newspapers, so we have to contend with the fact that the fear factor is embellished in many cases in order to sell more newspapers. Does Freedom of the Press Go Too Far?

discusses the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and
questions whether or not the media has pushed too far in terms of
what is “appropriate.” The public response to what it has come to
see as irresponsible journalism and commentators who disseminate
hate, misinformation, and biased judgment, has been something of
a backlash against the First Amendment’s guarantee to the right
of free speech. And yet, there is also significant concern that
if a voice one disagrees with is silenced, there is no security
that an agreed-with voice will not also be silenced.

A 5 page paper evaluating the major newspaper of Caracas, Venezuela. El Universal is a newspaper that, as most newspapers are, is a venue for reporting local events and news. It is also more, however. The publication appears to be one that means to serve the local community, but also a wider geographical range. It reports news from around the world as should any good newspaper, but it also carries stories that have a more collectively personal significance.
