Democratic Education
[ send me this paper ]
Dewey (1907) said that one goal of social institutions is to meet the changing needs of society in industry and commerce, but that is only one of many goals and should not replace the overall need to educate an individual to become his or her best simply because transient industries must be supported. He reminds educators to remember that other societal institutions must also be supported, and for this reason, education is interested in "character-building" for the express purpose of creating individuals who serve a fully integrated democratic society. (Dewey, 1907, 10). To do anything else is to undermine that society. Oakes & Lipton (2002) take Dewey to the next level to include multicultural global democratic cultures. 2 references.

Desegregation: A Work in Progress
[ send me this paper ]
( 5 pp) The federal mandate of racially integrated
schools began over forty years ago. Some schools,
particularly in the South, were able to ward off
compliance, for decades. Unfortunately, the
desegregation of schools has been predicated on a
case-by-case base and racially identifiable school
systems continue to exist today. But recently,
after the magnet and mid-point school plans, a new
wrinkle in the form of choice and charter schools
has surfaced. Bibliography lists 4 sources.

Developing An Alternative School
[ send me this paper ]
A 21 page paper. There have been alternative schools, in one form or another, in America for centuries. The need for alternative schools has become even greater over the last couple of decades. Although a common definition does not exist for this type of school, most agree the alternative school is the 'last chance' for a public education for those who are referred to them. These students may be referred by the juvenile justice system or by the regular school in the district. A comprehensive report of the history, need, and types of alternative schools and programs is offered. The second half of this paper discusses an alternative school to be established, including student populations, the names of surveys and questionnaires to be completed by parent/caregiver and/or student, the major curriculum areas, annual budget by line item, and student assessment processes. Data included. Bibliography lists 15 sources.

[ send me this paper ]
A 20 page paper addressing
