Los Angeles and Owens Valley: Over 80 Years of Water Conflict
[ send me this paper ]
This 10 page paper relates the story of the conflicts between Los Angeles and Owens Valley over water rights and access to water through the Owens Valley Aqueduct, which was built to provide access to water for the city of Los Angeles. This paper provides both sides of this issue, including the charge by farmers in Owens Valley that the water distribution has depleted the valley of a necessary resource for agriculture and the argument that Los Angeles needed the water resources and built the aqueduct for that purpose. Marine Pollution
[ send me this paper ]
A 3 page paper discussing the oceans reaction to polluting influences. Unless shocked beyond recovery, any body of water has the power to at partially clean itself, given enough time and enough physical space. The great witness to that ability is that we have not been able to kill any vast areas, in spite of apparent attempts to do so. The paper describes how inland farming pollution adversely affected the southern North Carolina coast following Hurricane Fran in 1996. Shellfish populations and commercial fishing had nearly recovered by the time Hurricane Floyd caused extensive inland flooding in 1999. The effects on the ocean have already been seen as floodwaters have moved through rivers into the ocean; how long recovery will take from this disaster is unknown. Bibliography lists 1 source.

Alternatives for Municipal Waste
[ send me this paper ]
A 4 page paper, with a one page outline, which
discusses the current conditions relating to municipal waste and the alternatives that are
being implemented to deal with the problems. The most obvious type of implementation
being put into use today is recycling. Unfortunately, this does not always work. A
definition of the types of recycling are illustrated. In addition we illustrate the method of
waste-to-energy, which presents a very positive way to dispose of waste. Unfortunately
no one method can prove completely effective, but perhaps through every possible way of
disposing of waste, we can see the future in a more positive light in regards to refuse.
