John Stuart Mill was raised in the shadow of the friendship between his father, James Mill, historian and philosopher, and Jeremy Bentham, at times a man considered to be one of the leading intellects of the 19th century. It is not surprising, then, that elements of their views on utilitarianism and their writings hold fundamental similarities, while also demonstrating the extension from the earlier perspectives of Bentham to the latter writings and developed ideas and postulates determined by John Stuart Mill.
