The parish nurse cannot provide services that substitute for hospital treatment or costly laboratory testing procedures, but s/he certainly can provide routine screening measures, educate patients on a variety of health-related topics and advise patients on when they do need to visit a doctor. Unlike nurses in non-parish settings, the parish nurse also is able to highlight issues of spirituality. In essence, the parish nurse has the ability to treat the whole patient, rather than only addressing symptoms as health care providers in most other venues are confined to providing.
