Gospel of Wealth/3 19th Century Perspectives
[ send me this paper ]
A 6 page essay that looks at the writing of 3 19th century authors. In the nineteenth century, the Industrial Revolution swept across Western society, bringing innumerable benefits. However, these benefits were not evenly distributed throughout all classes in society and changes also increased the disparity in wealth between the upper classes and the poor. Based on a doctrine of laissez-faire capitalism, the "robber barons" of the late nineteenth century lived in ostentatious wealth while the lives of common workers were considerably worse than they were in previous ages. The following synthesis essay examines the work of three social commentators from this era, Edward Bellamy, Henry D. Lloyd and Henry George. Each of these writers argues against the economic, political and moral implications of uncontrolled capitalism. No bibliography is offered.

Graham/Story of the Little Big Horn
[ send me this paper ]
A 5 page book review of this text. Colonel W.A. Graham's The Story of the Little Big Horn was first published in 1926. Not surprisingly, Graham uses the language of the time in describing the battle of the Little Big Horn, which was a resounding defeat of American troops under the leadership of Major-General George Armstrong Custer, the battle which soon became known as a "massacre" in the mainstream press. Graham uses the language of the time--whites are described as "forward-looking people," Native Americans are "savages," and the plunder of Native American land is pictured in terms of American Manifest Destiny (Graham 3). Nevertheless, despite this prejudicial and highly biased language, Graham's book does attempt to offer a fair and historically account of the battle and he pictures it as a clash between civilizations, rather than as a "massacre" by "savages." No additional sources cited.

Growth Of Industrialism After The War Of 1812
[ send me this paper ]
5 pages in length. The growth of industrialism after the War of 1812 served to improve relations between the North and West, yet the South did not share in the same industrial growth as a result in the rise of sectionalism. The changing face of the United States throughout the industrial and post-industrial eras appears to have called into question some of the fundamental assumptions of traditional American liberal ideology. Clearly, one can readily surmise that such ideology has been transformed in response to the social and economic changes that have occurred since the late-nineteenth century. To what extent did the core assumptions of sectionalism continue to dominate American political culture? When one considers the growth of industrialism after the Revolutionary War, it becomes clear that sectionalism, in and of itself, was at least partly responsible for some of these changes, many of which had to do with labor. Bibliography lists 4 sources.
