Adolescent Egocentrism


My observation took place at my boyfriend's house, who has a fifteen year old sister. I watched a total of eight adolescents, five girls and three boys, for about an hour. They had just returned from their freshman homecoming dance and it was a little after midnight. They were all still dressed in their suits and dresses, and very excited. is a form of thinking that involves 1)the belief that others are preoccupied with the adolescent, 2)that the adolescent is unique and 3)that the adolescent is indestructible.

was going to happen to them. Maybe nothing will, but still they believe that there isn’t even the chance even though it happened before. Drawing on my adolescence, I can remember thinking like that also.
The second example relates to the latter. I mentioned that all the other kids were going to the party and drinking and the other eight teens were going to hang out at the house, watch movies and have fun. They all made such a huge deal that they were a different group and they were not going with the flow. They all kept saying “We are the cool ones.” They also kept putting down and making fun of their other classmates. They were excited that they were in their own special, unique group. This shows the idea of adolescents thinking they are unique among their peers.
