Emergence of African history

To ask whether Africa has a history may seem to be politically incorrect at first. However, one does not really think of the history of the American continent in a holistic fashion. Rather one thinks of North American, Southern American, and Canadian history as fairly separate entities. Why does not one think of Africa in similar terms? The concept of 'African History,' is thus tied to the European historical perspective and paradigm of Africa as a 'dark' or pagan continent, uniform in its cultural texture, even though the African continent spans a range of languages, tribes, cultures, and ethnic groups.
