The air bag

Description:

The airbag is a safety feature in your car which will hopefully in the event of an accident stop you from getting seriously injured or death. The airbag is designed to work in conjunction with other safety features like the seatbelt. The airbag is normally situated in the dashboard and steering wheel of your car; however more modern cars are staring to have the airbags positioned in all sorts of places. For example: curtain airbags, seat airbags knee airbags and also pedestrian airbags. All these airbags have gone through extensive testing and designing to work under set conditions.

Operation:

An airbag deploys when the auto on the inside of the sensor has a sudden deceleration. This causes a switch on the inside of the inflator to activate a chemical reaction inside the airbag. The inflator mixes sodium azide with potassium nitrate which forms nitrogen gas, rapidly inflating the bag.

Once the bag has inflated the gases disperse out of the holes in the back of the bag when the person comes into contact with it. This is to cushion the impact of the drivers stop giving them a greater stopping distance and resulting is less harmful injuries. It is important to realise that if the airbag didn't deflate on impact that it would be just like hitting a brick wall.
