Al, In Phoenix

There are two particular characters in this short story that have different styles of thinking. There are deductive thinkers and there are inductive thinkers. Inductive thinkers are thinkers that come up with a conclusion based on series of events that repeat. Deductive thinkers are thinkers that come up with a conclusion based on facts that are already true. The narrator and Al possess these two different styles, the narrator being the deductive thinker and Al being the inductive thinker.

The narrator shows his style of thinking making assumptions fresh out of the gate. He seems to believe the diagnosis of his car because of the sound he has been hearing for the past year. He says that he hates working on his car now and would rather have somebody else take care of it. The thing is, is that he assumes that he "almost always know what's wrong, what to fix, because I did it so much when I was a kid". When his car is with Al, the narrator was to save time and seem to know it all and tells Al that the problem is the wheel bearing. While there, the narrator seems to be so persistent in wanting to know how long it would take to fix the car. He seems to believe, since Al has done this before, that Al should have the answer on how long it should take him. While waiting for his car to be completed, the narrator notices another vehicle pull up, and by eavesdropping a bit, diagnosis the problem to himself by saying, "just about an ignition key ...
