The way ethical challenges are handled can vary with the situation. About five years ago, Albert Belle who was then with the Cleveland Indians was suspected to be using a corked bat, which is illegal. When he and his teammates arrived at the field that night the umpires confiscated one of Belles bats and locked in the umpire’s office. The Indians were very worried because Belle was their leading hitter at the time and he would surely be suspended. Then Jason Grimesly, who was a rookie relief pitcher at the time, came up with a plan to steal the bat out of the umpire’s office by dropping into the room from the ceiling and replace it with another player’s bat. according to Patrick Maclagan’s book titled Management and Morality, can be viewed from two perspectives. One position is called consequentialism, which basically states the morality of an action depends on the outcome of the action. One consequentialist theory is utilitarianism which states “the morality of an action depends on its impact on the wellbeing or happiness of people affected”(Maclagan 26). If viewed from this position Grimesly should not be punished because in the long run his actions were not important in the outcome of the situation. The problems with this theory stem from the difficult task of measuring happiness and unhappiness, and in trying to predict the consequences of ones actions. Another way to view the situation could be from the non-consequentialist perspective which states that “the consequences of an action have no bearing on its rightness or wrongness”(26).
