Animal Farm's Use of Language and Propaganda

George Orwell's Animal Farm tells the story of some well-intentioned animals who overthrow their human masters and attempt to construct a socialist (or as they would call it, 'Animalist') utopia in which all animals are equal and live in harmony. It's a super idea! What could go wrong? Other than a corrupted lead who uses propaganda to stay in power.

Animal Farm portrays the use of language and propaganda to control the thoughts and beliefs of the classes. displays propaganda from the very beginning. In chapter 1 Old Major gathers the animals to discuss his dream. His dream describes a perfect world for the animals, where they get to rejoice in the fruits of their labour. Old Major's speech contains a combination of rhetorical questions, inclusive and emotive language, which furthers his argument. I'm not going to get too into Old Major's role in spreading propaganda as he was not entirely spreading it, Old Major was saying truthful facts but he did exaggerate the truth.

Squealer is used to show how propaganda has contributed to the animals have been victimized and oppressed. In addition to being a smart, crafty pig, Squealer is also a manipulative speaker.
