The Battleship Potemkin: Comparing Parts 3 And 4

Sergei Eisenstein's film The Battleship Potemkin (1925) depicts a revolution in 1905 which began with the mutiny of the sailors on the Battleship Potemkin. The revolt begins when the sailors are given maggot-infested food and refuse to eat it. When the captain orders that the protestors be shot, one of the sailors asks those with rifles to think about the fact that they are shooting their fellow sailors. This turns the tide, and a major mutiny begins, eventually reaching the streets of Odessa with a tribute to a fallen comrade. The people march up the Odessa steps as a mass and come face to face with the soldiers, then the people turn and run down the steps, trying to escape. Eisenstein depicts the people as a moving mass and cuts in for closeups of individuals and individual actions. He shows the mother and young boy as they run away from the soldiers, and he features the mother as she turns back to see her slain son lying on the steps. Another mother is singled out, a mother with a baby carriage, and she is also killed. Notable as well is the baby carriage drifting down the steps out of control, a symbol of the way the people are left to themselves in the danger zone that is their life in Russia.
