Bears. Across the four corners of the globe, these hairy mammals can be found on nearly every continent. There are multiple different species each adapted to their own specific environment; each species varying in size shape, color and behavior. Due to misinformation and ignorance these creatures have been given a bad reputation by society and are seen as murderous scavengers when in actuality very few bears will attack humans, and if they do it is typically because the bear is being threatened or desperately hungry. Ursus Maritimus literally means �Sea Bear�, the majority of polar bears are found close to the arctic shores. Polar Bears are expert swimmers/divers and frequently will retrieve food such as seaweed, clams, crabs and fish from the frigid depths. The bears can cruise along at depths of 15 feet and stay submerged for up to two and a half minutes. Polar bears travel great distances, the average beat will walk over 100,000 square miles in its lifetime.(�Polar Bears International�) Polar Bears are incredibly sensitive animals with eyesight and hearing rivaling that of humans. Even more sensitive is their sense of smell with which they can detect prey more than 40 miles away.(�Wildlife Forever�) In addition to seals, a polar bear�s diet also consists of walruses, beached whales, fish, and crabs.
