Booker T Washington

was born a slave April 15, 1856. His mother was a plantation cook. Booker’s father was an unknown white man. Booker and his mother lived in Franklin County, VA. As a slave child Booker gave water to the saves that worked in the field. After the American Civil War Booker and the other slaves were freed. Booker and his mother, than moved to Malden, W. VA. Booker’s mother married after Ferguson Washington.
Booker was the first African American to appear on an U.S. postage stamp. He also became the first person to have his image on the 50-cent piece coin. After being freed, Booker helped support his family. He worked on salt and coal mines. Booker self-taught himself the alphabet. ...

Institute. This had been established the Freedman’s Bureau’s chief to educate former slaves. Booker T earned money by sweeping and dusting classrooms. After he graduated he became a teacher. Booker taught in Malden, W. VA and at Hampton.
When the board of commissioners asked the head of Hampton to send a principal of their new school which had expected a white person, but they got , a black person, in June of 1881. He began class with 30 students in July, in a black church. Washington than borrowed money to buy an abandoned plantation where he moved the school. By the time of his death in Tuskegee, the institute was now a university. It had over 1,500 students and 100 equipped building and a big faculty.
