Cab Calloway

The great Cab Calloway was born in Rochester, New York on Christmas Day in 1907 in a middle class family. His father, Cabell, was a lawyer, and his mother, Martha, was a teacher. When Cab was young and was singing in church, his mom and dad noticed that he was good at it. So, they let him take vocal lessons at the age of 11.
As he got older, he started performing in jazz clubs around Baltimore, Maryland. After he graduated from high school, he went on to tour with his sister, Blanche. His father wanted Cab to be a lawyer, so he attended Crane College, but his main interest was to sing and perform. Glow” in 1934, and “The Jumpin’ Jive” in 1939. Besides his music, Cab Calloway also appeared in 5 stage productions, 13 full length movies, and 10 short films. Some of his more famous movies include “Big Broadcast” in 1932, “The Singing Kid” in 1936, and “Stormy Weather” in 1943.
In his later years, he continued to work on stage and in the movies. In 1979, he appeared in the movie “The Blues Brothers”.
In the movie, he wore his trademark white tie and tails and performed the now famous song around the world, “Minnie the Moocher”.
Cab Calloway continued to perform throughout the rest of his life until his death in 1994 at the age of 87 from a stroke. After his death, he received many honors including the National Medal of Arts and an honorary Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. He was also inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1999.
