In the years between the Civil War and the First World War, North Carolina underwent significant economic, social, and political changes. Health, education, technology, and the standard of living had all improved and gender and race greatly influenced the opportunities available to many North Carolinians. Many women, both black and white, as well as black men felt this time of the war was a great opportunity to test some limits. During the First World War the president made the decision to produce paper money not backed by gold, severely devaluing the dollar and increasing the prices of consumer goods. Peace across the pond “robbed the mills” of the textile industries while military market and changing consumer demands lessened the demand for cotton fabrics. After the war, what was previously a labor shortage quickly turned to a mill surplus. As a result, workers lost a “vital source of leverage in labor relations”, they felt powerless to resist the lay-offs, wage cuts, and increased workloads that their employers enforced.
