“The Legacy of Antigay Discrimination,” written by George Chauncey and “I Have a Dream” by Martin Luther King Jr. defend the rights of groups that have faced hateful discrimination. Both Chauncey and King set out to drastically change the opinions of narrow minded individuals, through the impacts of their writings. By using first person point of view, like in Kings speech, the reader can see the ideas of the author personally as well as the ideas of others involved. Persuasion is also used in both the essay and speech. Chauncey uses facts to enhance the view on the hateful discrimination of gay people, much like King uses examples to prove that blacks are still being treated poorly. “We can never be satisfied as long as the Negros’s in Mississippi cannot vote and a Negro in New York believes he has nothing for which to vote.” (King 616).
