Ionic Compounds

Throughout the laws and rules of chemistry, one major factor, which has important rules, can come as confusing to some. This topic is of course ionic compounds. There are rules necessary to tell what can and cannot be ionic compounds, which prove especially important in experiments. Ionic compounds are made up of cations, positively charged ions, and anions, negatively charged ions. When you understand how to find the chemical formula you must now understand how to name the formulas. The name for NaCl would be sodium chloride. The reason this would be the name is because there is only one sodium used allowing it to keep its name and the ending would be chloride because the endings of ionic compounds, for the most part, end with –ide. If you had the ionic compound of LiO, the name would be dilithium oxide. This name would be true because it takes 2 lithium atoms to balance 1 oxygen atom. The prefixes up to ten are as followed starting with 2: di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta, octa, nona, and deca.

Lithium Fluoride = LiF
Lithium Chloride = LiCl
Lithium Bromide = LiBr
Sodium Fluoride = NaF
