The day began just like so many before it. It was wonderfully warm with beautiful rays of sunshine shining through the windows. On this day I was seventeen years old and two weeks late with the pregnancy of my son. My ankles were huge, I felt like I weighed a ton, and my back was killing me. All I wanted was for this pregnancy to be over. I had begun each day for those last two weeks, hoping that today would be the day I would meet my child.

I was woken up at two a.m. with a very sharp pain in my back. It was a pain I have never felt before. So there I lay in bed hoping that my baby was finally going to make an appearance. The pains continued to come but were not very close together. I didn’t want to wake my grandmother when I knew it would be a while before we would go to the hospital. So there I sat in a very quiet house with the ticking of a clock and my contractions for company.

My hands had not quit shaking since I had woken up so early that morning, and I had never been so scared in my life.
