It is rumored that at the age of four, Clive Barker witnessed the death of French skydiver Leo Valentin after he plummet during the 1956 Whitmonday air show in Liverpool, to which he later alludes to in many of his works.
Early in his writing career barker began to experiment in the horror genre. Many of his early works which mostly consisted of short stories have been collected in Barker's book series Books of Blood: Volumes 1-6 and The Damnation Game. Barker credits other authors such as Stephan King, Herman Melville, William S. Burroughs, Edgar Allan Poe, among others as an influences on his writing. Barker showed an enthusiastic interest in film and production, many of his short stories would go on to influence or receive screen adaptions in later years.
