The first article, "Scientists Clone Endangered Asian Wild Cattle," from Reuters news service, reports about the successful cloning of the endangered cow, the Banteng. The most interesting aspect of this event is that the calves were cloned from an animal that has been dead for more than 20 years. This cloning was possible with the combined efforts of the San Diego Frozen Zoo, Iowa State University, Trans Ova Genetics, and Advanced Cell Technologies, located in Massachusetts. The article reports that one of the calves was born a normal size, but the other was born twice the normal size. This is the most common cause of death in animals that are cloned, which represents a number of problems with cloning in general. While the experiment ultimately failed, it is important to note that it was partially successful because the Banteng is closely related to the domestic cow, which was the birth mother for the Bantengs.
The articles bring to light the negative aspects associated with cloning, which include deformity that leads to early death.
