Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a medieval romance, centers on the behavior of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table. The storyline bases the actions of knights in accordance with the code of chivalry. The code of chivalry calls for knights to be brave, courteous and honest off the battlefield, and valor in battle. Sir Gawain faces many challenges in the story that cause him to sway from the code of chivalry.
The arrival of the Green Knight results in Sir Gawain’s the first break with the code of chivalry. When the king is challenged for battle, one of his men, according to the code of chivalry, is show loyalty by offering to take his place in the battle in order to avoid ...

On the third day of this agreement, Sir Gawain receives a magic green girdle from the lady of the castle that is said to keep him from harm. Fearing the Green Knight, Gawain lies to the lord of the castle about what he has received that day keeps the girdle. Gawain was not honest and did not keep his word, thus breaking the code of honor.
Continuing on his journey, Sir Gawain finds the Green Knight and engages in the second part of this Christmas game. The year before, Gawain got a free swing at the knight, and this year the knight gets a free swing at Gawain. However, here again, Gawain breaks the code of chivalry. He does not hold still in when the Green Knight swings at him, showing that he not only broke his promise, but also is a coward. The Green Knight goes on to cut Sir Gawain’s throat with his ax thus getting his fair swing.
