Romances are commonly thought of as love stories, but "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" is an ideal romance that contains the adventures of a hero who is tested on his bravery and falls in love with an unattainable women. These characteristics of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" are all characteristics of a romance during the Middle English era. "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" can be called a romance because it is an adventure story, legend, contains the supernatural, has a hero abiding by code of chivalry, and unattainable love.

Knight. He strikes the head off the Green Knight, and therefore it is the Green Knight's turn to strike Sir Gawain's head off. This is when the magical or supernatural part of the story comes. After Sir Gawain cuts off the Green Knight's head, the Green Knight picks up his head and puts it back on, which of course is impossible. Most romances will have a supernatural part to make a story more interesting to the listener or reader. Since the Green Knight is still alive, Sir Gawain must keep his promise of a stroke for a stroke, but the Green Knight thinks Sir Gawain is too young.
