Introduction

Depression can affect all ages and for many different reasons, but could depression sometimes be triggered in elderly due to an underlying infection of some sort? My patient has a long history of depression and suicide attempts with ideation, but I also noticed every time she was admitted to the hospital with these depression flares she also had urinary tract infections. With the information provided below you will see how a urinary tract infection can affect the brain in an elderly patient.

February, March, April and May from the years of 2010 to current, the only correlation I did notice is that on every admission the patient had a urinary tract infection found upon every admission.

Upon this last admission the patient had stated to the ED staff that "I don't want to be here; I just want to die." She admitted to staff that if left alone she would attempt suicide. Her plan was to go outside so no one could find her and lay down in the snow and die of hypothermia, but has also thought about starving herself to death.

Since last suicide attempt by overdose, the daughter moved in with mother, she is to have medications managed by someone and to have no access to medications. My patient is a chronic worrier and has a history of making poor and unsafe decisions when depression is not managed or is out of control. When visiting with my patient she let me know she gets tired of letting people down all the time, but is trying to work on not thinking that way. ...
