The term 'fetal alcohol syndrome' is not mentioned in the news is often as it used to be, but that does not mean that the problem has gone away. New studies are helping to dispel some of the myths that previously surrounded mothers who drank, and babies who were born with this syndrome, however. While many think that drinking during pregnancy is dangerous, studies indicate that women who drink in moderation during pregnancy have babies who suffer no ill effects at all. Drinking in moderation is defined by most studies as being up to 14 drinks per week, or two per day (Hanson, 2003).

Fetal alcohol syndrome occurs when the developing fetus receives too much alcohol on a continuing basis. This happens because the blood in the mother's body is also shared with the baby. Any alcohol that is in the mother's bloodstream will also be in the bloodstream of the fetus (Nofas, 2002). There is no evidence that minor amounts of alcohol will cause fetal alcohol syndrome, but many pregnant women choose to err on the safe side, and abstain totally from alcohol during their pregnancy (Hanson, 2003).
