Educating Rita is a play written by Willy Russell set in Liverpool during the 1980’s portraying the lives of two characters; Frank and Rita. The characters live opposite lives, and are also entirely different. Frank is an educated man who teaches Literature in a University whilst Rita is a comfortable, common blonde who is eagerly in search for a door to the high class world, In other words, Frank’s world of education and social status. Frank and Rita’s individual characters. “That’s a nice picture isn’t it?” The fact that Rita notices the nude painting before anything else suggests that she is attracted to such bizarre things, which emphasizes the idea that she is a comfortable woman who isn’t afraid of the outcomes of her speech and how people might respond to her non lady-like behaviour. Later on after studying the painting, she adds “It’s very erotic” which suggests that she is sexually active for this is how she portrays the subject matter of ‘erotic love’; nudity.
