The novel Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells tells the story of a family feud that occurs between the daughter and narrator Siddalee and her mother Vivi. With the persuasion of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Vivi sends Siddalee a scrapbook that allows her a real insight into who her mother is. This represents an attempt at real understanding where mother and daughter really get to know each other as people. This destroys the illusions that often define mother-daughter relationships. In short, if Vivi did not care so much about her daughter and especially about her daughter's opinion of her, she would not respond so strongly. This illustrates how the importance of family also tends to result in the struggles that occur in families. The same applies to Siddalee who also reacts strongly to her mother's response, including calling off her marriage. The struggles are also revealed by Siddalee's anger toward her mother. At the same time though, she also feels love for her mother. This actually enhances the struggle, since if she felt only hatred she could accept this and move on with her life, leaving her mother behind.
