Why do Americans like fast food so much? We know that fast food is a major part of American society now but it wasn’t always that way. “J. Walter Anderson started fast food by opening up the first White Castle in 1916 in Wichita, Kansas” (Files 1). It took until the post World War II era for fast food to become popular. While fast food certainly has many benefits, the main negative effect is that it is mostly unhealthy. For instance the Triple Whopper from Burger King has 1,250 calories. That is 62% of what you should consume in a full day. Also, just one cup of Starbuck’s Hazelnut Signature Hot Chocolate has 600 calories (Gregory 1). Time Magazine even did a countdown of the top ten worst fast food meals you can eat. Among the top of the list were the McDonald’s Triple Thick Shake with 1,160 calories and 27 grams of fat, and the Taco Bell Chicken Ranch Fully Loaded Taco Salad with 960 calories in just a seemingly harmless little salad. But the number one worst fast food meal is the Aussie Cheese Fries from Outback Steakhouse with 2,140 calories which is more than what is recommended in a full day.
