Foreshadowing in Of Mice and Men

Authors use many different crafts and tools to help build and improve their writing. Some of these crafts include symbolism, imagery, figurative language, and foreshadowing. Foreshadowing places clues in a story that signify events that will occur later in that same story. John Steinbeck used this skill extensively in some of his writings. Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck displays the craft of foreshadowing thoroughly throughout every chapter of the story.

when Lennie accidentally killed the mice his Aunt Clara gave him, and when he accidentally kills the puppy he tried to hold, and when he accidentally kills Curley’s Wife while trying to touch touching her hair. As it clearly has been presented, Lennie never intentionally harms these things, but his physical strength always becomes his weakness. The final use of foreshadowing in the first chapter appears as George instructs Lennie to come back to the same spot on the shore by the brush should any trouble arise, which it does in the sixth chapter.
John Steinbeck also uses foreshadowing in the second chapter. During the second chapter, George and Lennie begin meeting some of the characters on the ranch, including Curley.
The reader soon finds out that Curley does not like big guys due to his smaller stature, and that he actually likes to pick fights with them. George also tells Lennie to stay away from Curley and not to fight him. This foreshadows the fight between Curley ...
