Ongoing Global Environmental Challenges is a subset of the chapter in the text which seeks to examine the issues facing the world in terms of vital resources one of which is water.

My interest in this topic comes out of the ongoing conflicts regarding drilling for natural gas in the Pennsylvania mountains. questions are being raised as to the feasibility of natural gas drilling in the region. Two competing interests have arisen, the Natural Gas Industry (seeking a reasonably priced alternative to oil) and community organizations (seeking to maintain the health of the aquifer, along with rivers and streams which supply drinking water to the population in the region). While the nearby states of New York and New Jersey have undertaken legislative discussions and implemented stringent requirements to protect the water supply from pollution of fracking, Pennsylvania's elected officials have done little in the way of protecting local water supplies from possible widespread pollution.

I found it interesting that in this chapter, which looks at challenges facing the natural environment, the authors implied that when decisions are made that seem to favor production over environmental concerns,it is because people in the affected area are poor, not well informed, or lack political clout. ...
