Harriet Beecher Stowe
was born on June 11, 1811. This day marked the beginning of the life of a wonderful human being, someone whose love for life would inspire her to become one of the world’s greatest authors. "Her determination, drive, and desire helped her to accomplish all she aspired to do" (De Torres, interview, May 16, 1998). Through her own life experiences, was able to write novels that dealt with situations relatively familiar to her, be it trips to slave counties or her dear sister’s anguish, leading to their in depth descriptions and resulting in their success.

As Harriet grew older, Catharine was busy devoting her life to the education of women because at the time they were merely thought only good enough to be wives and housekeepers. Catharine’s hard and enduring work paid off because she eventually founded a school in Hartford, Connecticut. It was at this seminary that Harriet received her formal education. Oddly enough she did not attend college, but ended up becoming a teacher at her alma mater (Hedrick, BBR March 95).
In 1833, Lyman Beecher became the President of the Lane Theological Seminary in Cincinnati, Ohio (Ward, Introduction). Both Catharine and Harriet moved to Ohio with him, leaving behind their eight other siblings. This was the turning point in Harriet’s life. For one, she met and married her husband there.
