From the time we were little when our parents read us fairy tales and we spent our days watching “Thundercats”, to today when we watch action movies and read romance novels we all have been introduced to many heroes. We all know the type that saves the girl or kills the bad guy. But within mythology there are many more different types of heroes.
First there is the hero that wants to help their community and to remember. In the story “Chi Li Slays the Serpent”, Chi Li volunteers herself to the serpent because she thinks that it will help her family. “And since my life can do nothing for you, I would like my death to improve your lives in some way” (Chi Li 332). Another type of hero is one who does it to be a role model. In the story of “King Arthur” King Arthur himself is the true hero. He is this great king that is loved by his whole kingdom and all it’s servants and people. He was a valiant fighter and a fair King. Going along with the English culture, “he was a man of honor, to live in such a way that the other members of the nobility held him in high esteem” (Rosenberg 420). In the story, King Arthur’s wife Guinevere has an affair with one of his knights Sir Lancelot. The King knew of this, but because he did not want to shame his wife, he kept it to himself. He knew that the whole kingdom would shame her and he did not want to put her through that. I still consider that being a hero because in a way, he saved his wife’s life.
