The history of film has expanded a great deal over the last century. With the first major contributions being made in the late nineteenth century, motion pictures urbanized from a carnival novelty into one of the most important tools of communication and entertainment for modern day viewers. Motion pictures films have significantly affected the arts, technology, and politics.
Theatre and dance are the predecessors for film and all three have many common elements. Therefore, theatre and film have similar terminology. In 1882, Etienne-Jules Marey wanted to study animal and human locomotion. Therefore, he invented a chronophotographic gun. This gun was capable of taking twelve frames a second.
The second experimental film was produced on October 14, 1888. This film is now acknowledged as the most primitive surviving motion picture.
With these new discoveries, researchers of the late nineteenth century realized that films were a legitimate possibility. The original design of completely successful machinery was W.K.L. Dickson. He called it the Kinetograph, and it was patented in 1891.
