How accurate is it to say that King Frederick William IV of Prussia was responsible for the failure of the Frankfurt Parliament?


The Frankfurt Parliament was established in 1848, and its aim was to create a German constitution that would satisfy the whole of Germany through an elected parliament. It was created in response to the widespread revolutions throughout the German Confederation. Despite some achievements the parliament made, it was never able to achieve power or authority and therefore failed. to take the crown due to the fact that it would bring limitations to the powers of Prussia and himself. By placing Prussia under the control of the Frankfurt parliament, it would essentially be the end of all control over Prussia and having to accept standing laws and views of the German constitution. As a result of King Frederick not becoming leader of the Frankfurt Parliament, hope was removed from members within the parliament as they no longer had an influential leader to increase power over the people, and without both they were not able to have authority. With no influential leader as such, the parliament struggled to enforce laws and views onto the people as they did not have respect towards the members of the parliament, which consisted of middle class aristocrats, so the working and lower class felt no connection to them.
