The time is 6:45 AM. I bolt up out of bed, the ticking of the clock in sync with my thumping heart. The world around me is silent as tears brim at the corners of my eyes. Children scream in the distance, but I hear nothing. The weight of the impending apocalypse rests on my shoulders, as if I can feel the heat of the collapsing Sun on my skin. The planet is a burning mass of chaos. My mother tells me it’s time for breakfast. Time is running out.

Mornings should not be the beginning of a horror novel. School start times need to be pushed back. Because teens usually do not get the required amount of sleep and hurrying to get ready can be a hassle, students would benefit from a later start ...

of sleep can easily lead to depression and anxiety. During a study on the effects of later start times, results showed that the percentage of students who rated themselves as depressed fell from 66 percent to 45 percent after the start time was pushed back an hour.

As well as causing sleep deprivation, early start times minimalize the amount of time students and parents have to get ready in the mornings. Teens have little time to be organized, eat breakfast, and arrive at school. Every task is forced to hasten. Five minutes to get dressed, five minutes to shower, ten minutes to eat, twenty minutes to get to school. Racing to school in a half-alert state is a danger that is often overlooked. During another study on the effects of later start times, the results showed that there’s “a gathering body of evidence to suggest that pushing back school start times can cut the risk of car crashes” (Aubrey 3).
