How the New Netherlands Became New York

In chapters two and three of “The Brief American Pageant” by Kenney Cohen Piehl, we learn about the cultural clash in the Chesapeake and also how the Netherlands becomes part of New York. The clash was between the Indians and the English it was a very brutal war. The Netherlands becomes part of New York for land, food and crops mainly tobacco.
In 1607 the English landed in the James River area taken over most of the small tribes. Once that Lord De La Warr arrived in 1610 things got ugly with the declaration of war in the Jamestown region. The Powhatan people were considered extinct by 1685. They become victims of the three Ds, which was disease, disorganzation and disposability. They served no economic function to the colonists. In the sixteenth century the people of Netherlands became independent after they rebelled again Catholic Spain and won. The little nation quickly became a major commercial and naval power that challenged the supremacy of former benefactor, England. The New Netherlands was planted in 1623-1624 by the Dutch West India Company. They quickly became profit for fur trade.
