An inanimate object can be significant in a literary work. What purpose does the tape recorder serve? What other objects are significant in the play and what purposes do they serve?
In Arthur Miller's play "Death of a Salesman" inanimate objects are very important to the play. There are many inanimate objects in the play. The tape recorder, being one of the most important. The tape recorder represents all that Willy Loman is not or will never have. The repairing of the stockings by his wife is a constant reminder that he was unfaithful to his her. The rubber tubing, the Studebaker, the Chevrolet, and the refrigerator all represent Willy's ever-present struggle in life.

The rubber tubing shows the darker side of Willy Loman. He wanted to die, the rubber tubing is a painful reminder to Willy's family and the reader that suicide was the only way for Willy to get away from his troubles. This is one of the first realizations brought to the attention to the reader that Willy was suicidal.
The stockings that Willy's wife repairs so frequently, is a constant reminder of the affair that he had with another woman. Willy gave stockings to the woman who he was having an affair with as gifts. While his wife at home would have to repair her stockings. This seriously detrimental to Willy and was a constant reminder of guilt.
Willy's cars and the refrigerator all represent that Willy will never be able to get ahead in life. His cars always seemed to be breaking down. There was always another mechanical failure with the car. When the ...
