The chorus can play an integral and unique role in plays, serving the function of a collective omniscient character, a reflection of the audience's conscience, the character(s)'s conscience, or as a subtle method for the playwright to communicate with the audience. As an omniscient character the chorus can permit insight into characters' minds or into the general plot. The chorus can provide foreshadowing or hinting. When the chorus reflects the conscience of either the audience or the one or more of the characters, it serves a subtler service.
