Tihar, Asia's largest jail, is home to approximately 50 innocent children. Children are put behind bars because their mothers are either, a convict, or waiting for their trial. this number varies because Indian laws allow both convicts and those on trial to bring their children inside. They can stay until they turn five or six. It may be considered odd as to why mothers would bring their children into a place that can be as horrendous as a prison. The institute's head of criminology B.N. Chattoraj said "the government is still to act on his suggestions to improve jail conditions for women and children." get so hot in India in the summer, it usually spoils too fast. The children are then locked up until 3:00pm, let out to play or meet the rare visitor. Dinner is at 7:00pm and they are locked up again for the night. During the night, the children hear shouting between the inmates. Once every two months, the head of the creche takes all the jail children out to a picnic. All the children, especially the ones born directly into the jail life, are easily disturbed by things most people would appreciate such as flowers, and animals. Speaking of animals, when asked to draw some, every single child drew a cat because that was all they had ever seen. Also, when asked where they live, all the children shouted out, "Jail!!!" because in reality, that is where many of them have spent a majority of their childhood.
