the most interesting migrations in United States history was the Japanese migration to Hawaii. It showcased the many difficulties that the migrations to the states encountered.

While the first migration of Japanese is often believed to have occurred in 1885 the true first migration actually took place in 1868. It was on May 17th 1868 when a boat set sail from Japan to Hawaii for the purpose of immigration. The ship set sail out of the Japanese city of Yokohama (A Short Chronology of Japanese American History http://www.janet.org/janet_history/niiya_chron.html). On its vessel traveled 153 Japanese citizens who were bound for the Hawaiian borders. The reason this first group began the migration journey was to work in the sugar plantations of Hawaii. This was the first official migration from the nation of Japan to the islands of Hawaii. Since that time this group has been known as the Gannenmono.
